Josie Van Gent Edell is one of the top watercolor artists in the Southeast. A native of Amsterdam, Josie has lived in France, Spain, South Africa, and the United States. She is a Cum Laude graduate of Kunstoefening, Arnheim and received a five-year scholarship presented by Queen Wilhelmina. She then continued her studies at the Academy of The Hague where she received a BA & MA.

Upon recognition of her high achievements, Josie was awarded a second, five-year scholarship enabling her to travel throughout Europe where she worked with many accomplished Artists.

During the German occupation of Holland she served the Red Cross, transporting patients from the beach hospitals to the safety of inland facilities.

Following the war, she embarked on a successful career of advertising. Josie moved to the Charleston area in the late 60's where she continues to work and live. Her style is easily recognized throughout the Southeast and the South Carolina Lowcountry. She has been honored with many coveted awards including over 117 ribbons, twice receiving "Best in Show" by the South Carolina Watercolor society and Charleston Artist Guild, as well as many Grumbacher awards.

You can easily recognize the loose style of her watercolor in most of her work. Josie excels in portraits, still lifes, florals, and scenes of Charleston.
